As long as I can’t show you awesome pictures about the landscape of beautiful Australia or tell you uncredible stories about whatever, you will get a lot of: lets say very important stuff that will change your life. Or maybe not.

Just little things which are happening at my university or in a other column typical Australia peculiarities.

Multicultural Week

Last week the student association (SSAA) organised the “multicultural week” at our Hawthorn campus. What does that mean? At two days of the week one country was chosen to show something of their culture and on top there was free lunch provided, also something typical for this country.
On Tuesday our neighbor the dutchs baked some poffertjes for us and danced on clogs. The second country was Mexico on Thursday. I was too late for that one, but I heard that everyone who was fast enough got a burrito and could ask some students from Mexico about whatever.

Escalator

You are too tired to walk the stairs up? Ah, no worries! We have esculators. If they are working, then their are moving the whole day. Also when it’s evening and nobody is using it. We save the planet. Don’t we?

Databases

As more as I have to do some assignments, as more I’m faszinating about the incredible number of databases we can or should use. Maybe I just havn’t found such databases at HSRM, because I had no need yet. This databases gives us information about companies, industries, articles in newspaper or magazines or.. I don’t know. I just had a little little view on in. But other topics like design, film, multimedia or communications sound interesting. Maybe I find some time to have a look on them.

Lectopia

Hu, what the hell is “lectopia”? It’s a software which records some of the lectures at swinburne. This means: if you are sick ot just hadn’t time because of too many assignments, you can just go online and watch the lecture you missed whenever you want. This is awesome! I havn’t used it yet, because I was in every lecture so far, except of one. But at this unit lectures are not recorded. Which I found a bit strange because it is a multimedia subject called “user experience design”.

However. I find this topic very interesting, because last semester some people where asking our student association why no lecture will be recorded at my home university HSRM. It’s not like this is a whole German thing. There are German universities who are recording lectures. I only do not know which one does and with which software they are doing it. My guessing was that the university just has no money for it. (It’s a “university of applied science”. Financial support from the government are different to “normal” universities.) Also I’m not sure about what professors would think about it. If you see it in a negative way, a student could just say “But in last lecture you said the exam will look like this.” and take the video as a evidence.

Maybe this subject was discussed at the university, maybe not. If not, I hope it will be discussed very soon.
